Joe Lubbock was born in 1915 in London and grew up in Norfolk. He read engineering at Cambridge, then he worked on the development of the Spitfire and Wellington Bomber. Joe served throughout World War Two in the Royal Engineers. After the war he studied Art at Heatherly’s and St Martin’s, before returning to engineering and working on guided missiles and the first computers.

At this time Joe was living in Hatch End, Middlesex but he and his wife moved in 1963 to Suffolk to pursue his art. Here he was able to enjoy his other great love – sailing – in which he excelled. He had sailed for many years on the south coast and was a frequent winner of Flying Fifteen races.

In Suffolk, Joe produced his books in his studio, from which he could see the fields, woods and river which appear so often in his prints. Here too he wrote the texts of his books. Many of the books were printed by Sebastian Carter. The designs were etched onto copper plates, which were then applied with paint and printed by him onto special paper on a hand press.

Joe and his wife, Ruth, travelled extensively around the world, which inspired much of his work. He had three daughters (two of whom survive), nine grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren.

Exhibitions of Joe’s work have been held at: Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; National Library of Wales; Sainsbury Center for Visual Arts, University of East Anglia; Christ Church Museum, Oxford, and in publishers’ exhibitions.
